Obituary - Joan Kent Swaim (Minneman) 1928 - 2025
Joan Kent Swaim was born to Bert Kent and Nellie Buchanan Kent on June 22, 1928 in Rockville, IN. She was part of the 1946 graduating class at Rockville High School. Joan cherished her childhood in Rockville. Times were hard due to the depression but she spoke frequently of how neighbors pulled together to help each other. She always said even though everyone struggled during those years, she had many happy memories.
On May 16, 1946, Joan married Gilbert Arthur Swaim from Bloomingdale, IN. They purchased a farm in Sugar Creek Township where they lived until his death in 1991. Joan loved her years on the farm with her family. Gib and Joan were very active in the community and the county. They had 45 wonderful years on the farm. They enjoyed their American Saddlebred Horses and the many family trail rides, 4-H trail rides, and the horse shows that they helped their daughters show in. Joan also raised beautiful miniature schnauzers for many years.
In 2006, Joan married George Minneman. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Daniel, Wyoming. The love for the mountains and wide open spaces brought them great pleasure. George passed in 2018. Joan was also proceeded in death by her parents; William Kent, brother; Nellie "Sally" Kent, sister, and Nancy Kent Allee Slemp, sister.
Joan is survived by one brother, Don Kent of Nokomis, FL. and three daughters: Danise Baird (Jim) of Greencastle, IN; Dereth Swaim Gehlhausen (Jim) of Daniel, WY; and Lee Ann Curtis (Dave – deceased) of Columbia City, IN. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren: Brian Curtis (Ashley), Lance Gehlhausen (Tina), Logan Gehlhausen (Shannon), Damon Gehlhausen (Whitney), Vanessa Baird Norsworthy, Stacy Baird (Sheri), and Beau Beard. Joan was also able to enjoy and cherish 12 great-grandchildren. Joan would always say that her greatest pleasure and love in life was her family. She instilled in her children that money, careers, and friends come and go but family should be cherished above all else. Joan treasured her family and loved them beyond measure as she was loved by them.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rendezvous Pointe Senior Center in memory of Joan Swaim.
